It is the first time a dog with the same type of disease has been diagnosed with a deadly hemorrhagic disease (Rhdv2) in rabbits in San Diego County.
On April 10, 2020, a dead wild rabbit was reported to the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) at the Hockley County facility in Midland County, Texas. On May 6, we received a call from the AgriLife Extension Service, in collaboration with the USDA, confirming the presence of Rhdv2 in two rabbits in the Lubbock County. Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirmed that dead wild rabbits were found at three different locations in Colorado on April 20, 2019, two of which were on the Hocksley County property.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1,000 rabbits in the United States have been diagnosed with Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD). Rhapsody Cases have been reported in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, California and the state of New York.
RHDV-2 is considered a foreign animal disease and is of great importance both at state and federal level. The disease has been reported in rabbits in the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, China and South Korea.
